A Person:
Hey, oh
Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did
All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn

Oh and all I taught her was everything
Oh I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
Oh the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by
Some kids at play
I can feel their laughter
So why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin
Round my head
I'm spinning
Oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away

And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures had
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad
Turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see
All that I am
All I'll be

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why can't it be
Why can't it be mine
Há vinte anos tenho esse CD antológico.

And I hope some day you live a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why, WHY, *WHY* can't it be mine?

The hardest hitting line in any song, ever, because it's so God damned relatable.

I have this song on a regular playlist at home, the other day my almost 5 year old daughter and I were getting in truck to go to store. When the radio comes on "Black" is playing right about the "how quick the sun can drop away" part. My daughter with out hesitation says "turn it up daddy I love this song". I wish I coulda got my smile one video, dam talk about a proud pappa! She has no clue what the song is about but knows good music when she hears it.

My mom loves Pearl Jam, and especially this song. Even as a kid, this song always made me cry just because of how sad and hurt he sounds while he sings. Such a masterpiece...
This song makes me remember all the girls I met in my youth, girls that got away during a turbulent time in my life where I was finding myself and was emotionally unstable. It makes me feel the dread and regret of how I missed so many opportunities to have potentially beautiful relationships. All those pictures in the depths of my mind have all been washed in black... tattooed everything. Painful and bittersweet. Eddie nails the emotions perfectly with his vivid lyrics and expressive singing style.

I agree with Rick Beato this original version with the reverb sounds great ! Eddie supposedly does not like this mix because of the reverb but this sounds fantastic !

You feel this song... but it feels way different when your heart is not broken but rather destroyed by someone
when a song gives you visions of the end of the world and its only about broken love
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why, why, why can't it be, oh can't it be, mine?"
Perhaps the most relatable lyric in history to anyone who has ever experienced unrequited love.
A reminder of youth and young love.
